Complete Book of Tarot: Although the tarot originated as a deck of playing cards, it is commonly used today for divination, which we might define as brainstorming with the help of the gods. Some people may be put off by the idea of divination, so it is worthwhile to explore the meaning of this term. In Latin, divinus is a word referring to the gods. In ancient times, people believed that certain information, such as knowledge of the future, belonged exclusively to divine beings. Mortals, for their part, developed various methods to petition the gods to share their divine knowledge with humankind, and such methods were called divination.

Complete Book of Tarot: Many tarot readers are familiar with the Nordic or Futhark runes that can be used for divination. Some historians believe that the runes originated with the ancient Etruscans and spread to northern Europe via trade routes. According to one theory, knowledge of the runes may have played a role in the development of the tarot, though there is scant evidence to support this conjecture. The runes and the tarot are distinct divinatory systems, and there is no one-to-one correspondence between them. Nonetheless, the runes and tarot cards have some archetypal images in common, the most compelling of which is tarot’s Hanged Man, suspended upside-down like Odin on Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse mythology.
Complete Book of Tarot: Not long ago I attended a weekend workshop by Rachel Pollack, whose 1980 book 78 Degrees of Wisdom, A Psychological Approach to the Tarot was highly influential in changing the way tarot is practiced in the English-speaking world. At one point during the conference, Rachel commented that she and Mary K. Greer are credited with rescuing tarot from fortune-telling in the 1980s. Prior to that time, the use of the tarot focused primarily on telling the future.
