Inner Journey Meditation

This meditation has evolved for those interested in white witchcraft but you may also use it to meet your spirit guides, substituting as appropriate where gods and goddesses are mentioned.

A vivid imagination, directed by magical training, is the most effective tool we have for changing the world, and it is something which has often lain dormant since childhood. The world of myth is still there, but our adult eyes tend to look through it. We can regain the dimmed sight if we so wish, and with it see infinity, explore the far side of the Moon, visit the lands of lost legend and draw on the power that lies there.

Making an Inner Journey

Here is an imaginary journey to a place that is peaceful, powerful and magical, and where it is easy to sink into an altered state of awareness to commune with the inner beings. Get into a meditative frame of mind, and make sure you will not be disturbed for about half an hour. If possible, record the narrative on tape, pausing after every sentence to allow the images to build up, or get a friend to read it to you, or go through it a number of times until you can recall the various stages. Allow the images to become as real as possible.

The journey is to the Hall of the Gods, where you will be able to insert your images of the God or Goddess. Try these one at a time, until you are really able to see, feel, sense and appreciate their presence.

You are creating the pictures partly from memory or imagination, and partly because they are real in another realm or dimension. Of course you can share the experience with your friends.

  1. You may like to light a candle and open a circle of protection, perform the self-blessing or otherwise make yourself ready.
  2. Sit upright, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Allow it to slow down and become deeper.
  3. Begin to build up a picture of an elaborate doorway; see the frame and the details of the closed door. What is it made of? What does it feel like to the touch? How can it be opened? This is the door from your world to the realm of the Gods.  There may be a guardian who is there to inquire who you are and why you wish to go through, or to ask for a password, a token or sign. You will have to find your own answers.
  4. After a few moments, as you continue to relax and make the experience deeper, you will find that the door can be opened. At first a great light seems to be shining through the doorway, and you stand on the threshold while your inner vision adjusts.
  5. The light dims so that you can look into the place beyond, and what you see is a glorious hall, built of golden stone. Upon the walls are paintings or hangings picked out in bright colors You step forward on to a paved floor covered in mosaics. Everything you see is on a grand scale. The ceiling is high above but that too is painted and gilded, and everything is beautiful. To one side of the room there is a platform reached by several steps covered with marvelous brocade, and on the dais is a throne, carved and covered in gold. Upon it you start to make out a figure that is both awe-inspiring but also somehow approachable.
  6. You move towards the steps and try to make out the face of the figure seated above you. (At this point you will need to insert the description of the deity you wish to meet, as described to the right.)
  7. When you have had your audience with the deity, taking as long as you need, always give thanks, even if the advice is not immediate, and act with respect.
  8. Allow the image of the great hall to fade, so that you see again the door and threshold. The light dims and gently you return to your own place.
  9. Unwind your circle slowly, allowing your memory to recall every detail.
