Here are some extracts from a few of my favorite books

LLewellyns Complete Book of the Tarot by Anthony Luis Buy the Book!

Complete Book of Tarot: This exquisite deck was owned by the Venier family of Venice. Most likely produced around 1491 by artist Nicola di Maestro Antonio, the Sola-Busca deck consists of seventy-eight cards and is unique in that each card is illustrated with characters based on figures of classical antiquity. Some authors believe that the symbolism of this deck derives from alchemical theories about transforming base metals into gold. The practice of illustrating each of the seventy-eight tarot cards with a unique scene or character would not be repeated until Pamela Colman Smith painted the now famous Rider-Waite-Smith deck in 1909.

Complete Book of Tarot: When upright, the Temperance trump suggests that you are dealing with a situation involving the reconciliation of opposites within yourself. Like the alchemists of old, you are trying to convert a base metal into gold. You are called upon to act with moderation and exercise the virtue of temperance. With persistent effort you will be able to blend competing forces harmoniously to create something of greater value. The Renaissance artists who created this image were no doubt inspired by the mixing of water and wine in the Catholic Mass during which the priest prays: “Through the mystery of this water and wine, may we partake in the divine nature of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

Complete Book of Tarot: Do this exercise with each card for each position of a tarot layout or spread. Common spread positions include past, present, future, obstacles, assistance, advice, pros, cons, hidden issues, one’s environment, hope and fears, likely outcome, and so on. A detailed example of this exercise can be found in the book Tarot Decoder by Kathleen McCormack, in which the author gives her impressions of the meaning of each card in each of the ten positions of the Celtic Cross spread.
